Nigerian judges here to share experience with Rwandan counterparts

About 30 judges from the Lagos high court in Nigeria arrived in Rwanda on October 31, 2013 for the annual retreat aimed at sharing experience with their Rwandan counterparts.

 

“This retreat conducted every year by the Lagos high court judges, away from home was scheduled to take place in Kenya, but following the recent attack on the Westgate mall in Nairobi we were prompted to choose Kigali as our second option,” said Lagos High Court Chief Justice, Justice Ayotunde Adeyoola Phillips.

 

“We had long starved to get this opportunity to get hands on information on Rwanda, concerning the country’s recovery from the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi,” Ayotunde said.

 

He said the group will also use the opportunity to visit various tourist destinations such as the Virunga national park to track mountain gorillas.

 

During their weeklong stay the judges will be able to visit various tourist attractions across the country as well as development projects in Kigali, northern and southern provinces

 

The delegation will be able to learn and share experience in the justice sector with their colleagues in Rwanda.

 

Rwanda’s high commissioner to Nigeria Joseph Habineza, said the tour presents various opportunities to Rwanda economically especially in the tourism sector.

 

He added that it would also strengthen bilateral ties, which are beneficial to Nigeria and Rwanda.

 

Presently the two countries are enjoying very good bilateral relations. Since 2011 Rwanda opened its high commission in Abuja and in 2012 Nigeria also opened their high commission in Kigali.
